North State Hardwoods, Inc. was founded over 20 years ago and began as a hardwood trading company located in the foothills of western North Carolina. In March of 2007, founder Scott Greene purchased a hardwood sawmill in Wilkes County, North Carolina, and High Country Lumber, LLC was formed. After weathering the recession of the late 2000's, many improvements to the sawmill were made. In the years to follow, the addition of multiple steam-fired kilns, a mulch grinder, a double-cut band mill, optimization and scanning equipment, and a curve-sawing gang and sorter have brought the mill almost to where founder Scott Greene envisions it to be. We take pride in operating a sustainable, zero-waste facility.  Each and every part of a log is used or sold for future use in other products. The technology we utilize each day ensures that we produce the least amount of waste while producing the greatest product yield. The bark from each log is ground in our mulch grinder and used or sold to consumers as landscape-quality mulch. Sawdust accumulated from the mill fuels the boilers that run our steam kilns daily. Trimming biproducts are also sold and used to manufacture paper products. Another biproduct of the sawmill is logs too large to be sawn into lumber by the grade mill. Being situated in the high-quality timber region of the Blue Ridge Mountains and purchasing high end Appalachian timber, these large logs inevitably - and regularly - come to the sawmill. Realizing the massive accumulation of these large diameter logs, the decision was made to install a slab mill and begin producing live-edge slabs. We currently have a large inventory of over 3,000 live-edge slabs in a variety of different species and dimensions.
